The Constitution of India: Fundamental Rights of Citizens

While its a huge debate going on around Freedom of Speech and Censorship of data on the web, as a citizen of world's largest democracy (India) we should know what rights each citizen has been awarded in the Constitution.

Least known facts about Constitution of India:

The Indian Constitution is the longest constitution in the world, with 444 articles, 12 schedules and 94 amendments. Thus, everything has a detailed account there, with all the laws and rules in place. It is not possible for us to remember the whole constitution, but what we should learn from it, are the following:

Any Indian citizen is guaranteed of these fundamental rights:
I) The right to Equality
II) The right to Freedom
III) The right against Exploitation
IV) The right to Freedom of Religion
V) The Cultural and Educational rights
VI) The right to Constitutional Remedies
When an individual's fundamental rights are compromised, he/she can go to court for justice.

In addition to these rights, we should also be aware that we have certain duties as our responsibility towards our country. These fundamental duties are:
I) Obeying the Constitution and respecting the National Flag and National Anthem.
II) Following the noble ideas of our Freedom Struggle.
III) Protecting the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.
IV) Rendering National Service when required.
V) Promoting harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood among all the people of India.
VI) Preserving our rich cultural heritage.
VII) Protecting and preserving our natural environment.
VIII) Safeguarding our public property and giving up of violence.
All of us should keep these duties in mind and discharge the same whenever required.

Thus, these are the basic ideas we can learn from our Constitution.
Every Indian must be aware of his / her fundamental rights given by the Constitution.

  • * Interim - It is debatable whether Mr. Gulzari Lal Nanda was a Prime Minister or an Acting Prime Minister. The constitution does not have a position of acting Prime Minister. Mr. Nanda was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India. In contrast, the constitution provides for an acting President who discharges the duties of a President. Hence, constitutional experts and historians now count Mr. Nanda as the second Prime Minister of India.
